Suggest a question for the monthly COVID-19 survey

Researchers are invited to propose questions for future months of the COVID-19 survey.

Understanding Society is launching a monthly web survey on the experiences and reactions of the UK population to the COVID-19 pandemic. The survey will be an integral part of Understanding Society: the UK Household Longitudinal Study. Researchers will be able to link the data from this web survey to answers respondents have given in previous (and future) waves of the annual Understanding Society survey. The first wave of the COVID-19 web survey is being fielded in late April 2020. 42,000 Understanding Society adult sample members were invited to participate in the first wave.

Do you have a question you would like included in the survey?

This is a call for proposals for questionnaire content in the second and future waves. We are limited to a 20 minute survey, of sample members aged 16 years and older, and some content will be repeated from wave to wave. We invite researchers and analysts to suggest questions for the available question space. Given the constraints, it will not be possible to field all proposals. In choosing among content proposals, we will apply a set of principles.

  • It should be in our core priority areas; (employment, income, health, family, education, civic engagement);
  • It should build on the longitudinal strengths of the Study, so links to data we have collected before or will collect in the future;
  • It should be content that needs to be collected ‘in the moment’ rather than being asked retrospectively in a future annual survey;
  • It should be content that is enhanced by the household structure of the Study; • It should be of significant research and/or policy interest;
  • Complementarity with existing content will be considered a strength.

Understanding Society will not be the appropriate vehicle to collect all relevant topics during the pandemic, and proposals that do not meet these criteria might be better directed elsewhere.  Even within the set of proposals that meet these criteria, it may not be possible to include all of them all. Concise sets of questions are more likely to be included then over-long ones. You can read the full call for proposals here.

Proposals must be submitted online here.

The deadline for submissions is the 3rd of the month, for inclusion in that month's survey.
