The Board meets twice a year and includes around 10-12 members who represent the range of stakeholders engaged with the Study, for example, academics, charities, think tanks, government departments and other public bodies. The Strategic Oversight Board reviews and advises on the direction and operational delivery of Understanding Society in particular:

  • how well the Study is managed, curated, developed, and enriched;
  • how well the relationship with participants is managed and that participants’ rights and interests are respected;
  • access arrangements for the resource so it is suitably managed and maximised for public benefit;
  • the procedures to monitor progress towards the fulfilment of the Study’s key aims and objectives and to monitor risks; and;
  • the team’s plans for the long-term future of the Study.

Members of the Board are appointed for a three-year term with one option of renewal. Please note that being a member of the Strategic Oversight Board is a voluntary position and members will not receive payment, although expenses would be reimbursed for any face-to-face meetings.

We’re looking for individuals who have an interest in Understanding Society, social science longitudinal data and survey development and who would like to have an active involvement in the future direction of Understanding Society.

If you would like to apply to become a member please email your details, the perspective you feel you would bring to the Study, and include a link to a cv, online biography or LinkedIn profile to Cheryl Pasfield, c.pasfield@essex.ac.uk.

The deadline for applications is 29th February 2024. For more information on the Strategic Oversight Board, you can read the terms of reference for the Board here.
