Taking place at the University of Essex on Monday 23 September, registration for pre-conference workshops is now open. Places on theses workshops are open to anyone, you don’t need to be attending the SLLS Annual Conference to join.

Workshop 1: Secondary data analysis across studies: an introduction to cross-study research.

This half-day workshop (9.00 – 13.30) will provide an insightful introduction to the methodology and techniques of secondary data analysis across studies, with a focus on longitudinal cohort study data. The UK is home to some of the world’s largest and longest-running longitudinal population studies and cross-study analysis can help to understand more about group differences, the role of contextual factors, and how societal changes may impact on outcomes for individuals over the life course or across generations.

Workshop 2: ‘Social-to-biological’ research: conceptual framework and quantitative data to investigate how social circumstances get under the skin.

This full-day workshop (9.00 – 17.00) will introduce concepts for analysing the social and biological dynamics across the life course that influence health and well-being. It will also present data and measurement approaches based on international studies that allow to investigate such questions (incl. harmonized data from the Gateway to Global Aging Data platform), and provide practical examples of how social and biological measures are commonly linked in research.

Workshop 3: Introduction to household panel studies

This full-day (9.00 – 17.00) workshop will highlight the research possibilities of using household panel surveys focussing on four long running household surveys across the world: the PSID, 1968-present, United States , the SOEP, (1984-present) Germany, the BHPS, (1991-2008) and Understanding Society (2009-present) UK, the HILDA Survey, (2001-present) Australia. Participants will learn about the unique features of these surveys, their similarities and differences and research potential for studying individual lives in these countries separately or together for cross-country comparison through a series of lectures. The second half of the workshop will consist of demonstration sessions, where instructors will show, using Stata, how to use the survey data to answer a common research question.

You can register for all workshops on the SLLS website.

General registration for the SLLS conference opens at the beginning of July. For more information about the conference go to the conference website.
