Our new Moodle course offers guidance for researchers interested in creating their own tailored weights for Understanding Society.

The course, developed by Understanding Society Survey Statistician, Dr. Olena Kaminska, provides guidance on creating your own tailored weights for Understanding Society. For most users the existing weights will be suitable, but in rare situations a tailored weight is beneficial.

Who is the course suitable for?

This course is suitable for experienced users of Understanding Society who would find a tailored weight beneficial for use in rare situations, such as when an unusual set of instruments and/or waves are combined. If you are unsure whether you need a tailored weight for your analysis, watch the first video in this course ‘Do I need a tailored weight?’

What will I learn?

The course contains 5 sections:

  1. Do I need a tailored weight?
  2. Selecting a base weight
  3. Taking mortality in account
  4. Exercise on nonresponse correction
  5. Example of creating a tailored weight in the UKHLS
