The new release includes data from a COVID specific youth survey and data from the main Understanding Society survey from 2019, as well as data from the adult COVID survey fielded in July.

Youth data

At the end of July a paper youth survey for children aged 10-15 years was sent to households with children. The youth survey used questions from the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire to see how young people were coping during the coronavirus outbreak. You can read the questionnaire here. The adult COVID-19 survey also included questions on special educational needs for children and young people aged 5-17.

COVID-19 survey Wave 4

Wave 4 of the COVID-19 adult survey was collected in July and the survey included questions on

  • Coronavirus symptoms
  • Management of long-term health conditions
  • Caring within the household
  • Loneliness
  • Housing
  • Employment, finances and financial security
  • Religion
  • Volunteering during lockdown
  • Sleep
  • Nutrition, diet and food security
  • Life satisfaction
  • General Health Questionnaire

The Wave 4 data release also include data from the telephone interviews carried out in May. Updates to Waves 1 to 3 of the survey are also included in this new release.

2019 Understanding Society main survey data

Alongside the COVID-19 survey, the new dataset also includes data from the main Understanding Society study for 2019. The Understanding Society COVID-19 data can be linked to the End User Licence version of the annual Understanding Society data (SN 6614), which are also available from the UK Data Service. Wave 9 is the latest available wave of the annual interviews, with fieldwork conducted in 2017 to early 2019. To bridge the gap between the latest data from the annual interviews and the COVID-19 data, we have made interim data from the interviews conducted in 2019 available with the COVID-19 data. These are from the Wave 10 year 2 interviews and the Wave 11 year 1 interviews.

Please note: The 2019 data released with the COVID-19 study contain only sample members who have responded to the COVID-19 study plus other members of their households, they do not contain all respondents who have completed Understanding Society interviews in 2019.

The dataset can be downloaded from the UK Data Service. There is a user guide to help researchers make the best use of these data and the variables included in the dataset can be found in the variable search area

The COVID-19 survey is funded by the Economic and Social Research Council and the Health Foundation. Fieldwork for the survey is carried out by Ipsos Mori and Kantar
