The course is mainly for users of Understanding Society, but does not require prior knowledge of the dataset. However it is especially useful for those who are starting to use the data, or are moving to a more advanced use of data such as longitudinal analysis of the PEACH dataset, or using an unusual combination of Understanding Society instruments in their analysis. This course is free to attend.
What will I learn?
Understanding Society features a highly complex survey structure that must be accounted for in any analysis to ensure accurate population inferences. A straightforward way to do this is by applying weights along with strata and clustering adjustments. This course is designed to guide participants in understanding weights when working with Understanding Society data.
The course comprises two parts. The theoretical segment explores the importance of considering complex sample designs, the impact of neglecting weights on results, the methodology behind weight computation, the types of weights available in Understanding Society, and how to select the correct weight for specific analyses. The lab session will provide practical exercise, guiding participants in creating tailored weights to suit their analyses.
Course materials
In addition to lecture slides, participates will receive Stata syntax and video material on how to create their own nonresponse correction.
Software and technical requirements
Participants should have access to a computer or laptop with Stata Version 13 or higher, Excel or any other statistical software installed.
