Understanding Society, based at the Institute for Social and Economic Research, is supported by a vibrant and diverse team of researchers. We’re looking to expand and have two new posts to fill.

Senior Research Officer

The successful candidate will join the research team of Understanding Society and will contribute to a range of activities involving new data and techniques used for the Study. This post is fully funded by the ESRC to support the development of and research on the Study, and ways of sharing such data with the wider research community.

In particular, the post holder will identify and wrangle new sources of data to conduct research relevant to the larger goals of Understanding Society. The successful candidate will collaborate with the study’s team to develop innovative methodologies to link these new data to Understanding Society data, and to ensure effective sharing of such data with the wider research community.

Deadline for applications is 11 August.

Research Assistant

The post holder will provide research assistance and support that contributes to the development of Understanding Society, especially in relation to income research.

Data on income is a central and important component of the Understanding Society study as it facilitates both academic and policy research on the income distribution and inequalities. The study devotes substantial questionnaire time to the collection of detailed income data which need to be carefully coded to produce different income variables that are then included in the publicly available Understanding Society datasets. The post holder will not only contribute to the ongoing production, coding and quality checking of these derived variables but also contribute substantially to the development of exciting new income resources that will be made publicly available to the policy and research community.

Deadline for applications is 22 August.
