The Understanding Society COVID-19 study is a panel study on the experiences and reactions of the UK population to the COVID-19 pandemic. The survey is an integral part of Understanding Society: the UK Household Longitudinal Study and researchers can link the data from this survey to answers respondents have given in previous (and future) waves of the annual Understanding Society survey.

The first wave of the COVID-19 survey was fielded in April 2020, with monthly waves until July 2020. From September 2020 onwards the survey was fielded every two months until March 2021. A final wave was fielded in September 2021 and this data is now available to researchers.

The COVID-19 survey data is available from the UK Data Service, Study Number 8644.

Questionnaire content

The COVID-19 questionnaire includes core content that is repeated in each wave to track changes over time, plus rotating content to explore specific topics. The content for each wave of the COVID-19 survey can be found in the long-term content plan

In this final wave of the survey, participants were asked about:

  • Coronavirus symptoms
  • Long-term health conditions
  • Caring for people inside and outside their household
  • Life satisfaction
  • Employment, working conditions, job searches and training
  • Work expectations
  • Financial security
  • Fertility intentions
  • Flu jab and coronavirus vaccination
  • NHS App use
