Applications open for PhD studentships

Understanding Society funds doctorates on families, pregnancy and early childhood, and survey methods.

Understanding Society is looking for candidates interested in studying for a PhD in Sociology, Economics, or Survey Methodology. Based at the Institute for Social and Economic Research at the University of Essex’s Colchester campus, the studentships will last three years – beginning in October 2023 and completing in 2026.

The studentships are funded by Understanding Society’s grant from Economic and Social Research Council, and will cover tuition fees for home/EU and overseas students, and provide a tax free stipend of £17,668 per year.

There are three categories:

  • Families across households – for research in Economics or Sociology on family dynamics using Understanding Society.
  • Innovations in data collection methods in a household panel survey – supporting research in survey methodology for innovative data collection using Understanding Society.
  • Pregnancy and early childhood – for research in Economics or Sociology on pregnancy and early childhood using Understanding Society. This studentship is also available as a 1+3 award, where year one is a MSc followed by a three year PhD. 

The studentships are part of the South East Network for Social Sciences (SeNSS) Doctoral Training Partnership, and applications are open now, closing on 28 February 2023.

Applicants must have:

  • a degree in an appropriate area of sociology, economics or other social science, statistics, or health sciences
  • strong quantitative skills
  • appropriate research training, Masters degree or equivalent assessed training or demonstrably equivalent professional experience.

The process involves an application form and cv, plus a research proposal of around 2,000 words.
