The course has been developed by Professor Paul Clarke, Director of Research at the Institute for Social and Economic Research and Understanding Society Topic Champion for Statistical Methods. It provides guidance on calculating the effect of mixed modes using Understanding Society data.
Who is the course suitable for?
This course is suitable for users of Understanding Society who are already familiar with the data structure of the Study and have knowledge of running statistical analysis using Stata.
What will I learn?
Users will learn about the mixed mode design in Understanding Society and how to assess the impact of the move to web on estimates based on the data (mode effects) as well as the challenges and opportunities a mixed methods approach brings to a survey.
The lessons will take you through some newly developed Stata programs to estimate the mode effects while adjusting for non-random mode selection. In particular, you will be shown how to use data from the sequential mixed-modes experiment carried out at Wave 8 of Understanding Society to produce robust estimates of different types of mode effects using instrumental variables regression.
The course contains 8 sections:
- Introduction
- Mixed modes in UKHLS
- Preparation – downloading the data
- Introduction to mode effects
- Estimating mode effects
- Exploiting the randomised sequential experiment from UKHLS Wave 8
- Auxiliary data
- Appendices: Syntax for mode estimation programs
