Looking to upskill this season? Understanding Society offers a wide range of conferences, workshops and events for researchers, policy makers and practitioners throughout the year.

Most of Understanding Society’s events are free to attend and are published on Eventbrite, so we recommend following our profile on Eventbrite so you don’t miss our latest listings. Places on the training courses below are limited, so book your place now. They’re all free to attend, but advance registration is required.

November 2024 events

Introduction to Understanding Society

21-22 November, 9.00 – 17.00 – online

This two-day course is aimed at new users of Understanding Society, as well as those who have so far only made use of simpler aspects of the dataset. It aims to guide the user through the complexities of using these data for cross-sectional and longitudinal analysis, and ensure that they can make effective use of Understanding Society for their own research projects. Training is delivered in Stata, SPPS and R.

Using UKHLS child and youth data

28 November, 9.30 – 16.00 – online

This workshop is aimed at new users of Understanding Society children and youth data, covering information from pregnancy up to age 15. It will explain the different files and data collected, and help users manage the data for statistical analysis in their own research projects. This course is delivered in Stata.

Geographical data linkage

29 November, 9.00 – 13.00 – online

This course is aimed at researchers and analysts who are familiar with Understanding Society and want to geographically link Understanding Society data to various UK open data sources. This course is delivered in Stata.

Using weights in Understanding Society

29 November, 13.00 – 17.00 – online

The course is mainly for users of Understanding Society but does not require prior knowledge of the dataset. However, it is especially useful for those who are starting to use the data or are moving to a more advanced use of data such as carrying out longitudinal analysis. This course is delivered in Stata.

Introduction to logistic regression using Understanding Society

30-31 January, 9.30 – 16.00 – online

This two-day course is aimed at quantitative researchers and data analysts who are familiar with linear regression methods and would like to learn the fundamentals of binary response models: logistic regression.
