Understanding Society’s annual Insights publication is out, looking this year at the UK’s housing crisis.
In previous years, Insights has showcased research using Understanding Society which is relevant to government policy. This year, following an election in which all the main parties agreed that there was a housing crisis, and had manifesto commitments to build more homes, we look at:
- the extent of the housing shortage
- its effects on inequalities (especially for younger people, older people, and marginalised groups)
- how housing can play a part in economic growth
- how housing affects health, both mental and physical
- the role of housing in the drive for net zero.
Research for policy
The report examines issues such as:
- lower, slower and later homeownership
- poverty and overcrowding
- homeownership and inequalities in wellbeing
- affordability and mental health
- housing and climate change.
It identifies specific policy solutions for some of the most significant problems, including:
- more affordable and social housing
- reforms to planning and to council tax
- greater protection for tenants
- higher energy efficiency standards.
