"Our interviewer has seen us increase from a couple to a family of four"
After reading our newsletter, Charlotte Betts* wrote in to share her experience of Understanding Society so far.
Understanding Society first contacted me several years ago and I was a little wary at first since I don’t like to bring strangers into my home. But I do like to support research and it turns out the Understanding Society study is one of a kind, collecting all sorts of data about how our society is changing.
It helped that it was founded through Essex University – in my home town – so I was confident of the credibility of the study.
The lady that came to visit us called in advance to make an appointment at a time that was convenient to us, as she has continued to do every year since. We also receive a £10 gift voucher each, every time we complete the survey.
The interview experience
It was interesting reflecting on our lives and even more so when we received the summary update info of how society as a whole is changing – we could see where we fit into the bigger picture and how we compared to the ‘average’!
I enjoy catching up with our interviewer every 12 months. She has seen us increase from a couple to a family of four and has been to visit both of the houses we have lived in as a married couple.
“Completing the survey each year seems like a nice way to reflect back on the year, share it with someone who is genuinely interested and at the same time support the greater research project.
We have just received our gift vouchers again this year and I am looking forward to a phone call from our interviewer in the near future.
