Understanding Society’s annual Insights publication has been published, focusing on three different areas where research can shine a light on government policy. This year’s themes are:
- economic insecurity and the cost of living
- long-term inequalities and health
- improving work and health.
Key findings
Some of the findings from the research include:
- links between fuel poverty and financial distress
- the rise in pensioner poverty
- health inequalities in ‘left-behind’ neighbourhoods
- the impact of working conditions on mental health.
Raj Patel, Associate Director of Policy at Understanding Society, says, “This year’s Insights looks at three major policy challenges. According to a National Audit Office report, only 8% of major government projects are evaluated – but whether a policy is achieving its desired outcome, and for whom, is an important question. Understanding Society’s household panel design and multi-topic content can make an important contribution to evaluation.”
The publication is being launched with two events:
- Economic insecurity and resilience in times of disruptive change – a hybrid event, in central London and online on Monday 6 February
- Long-term spatial inequalities and health, online on Wednesday 8th.
