Migrant Lives: Migration, gender and the unfurling of inequalities over the lifecourse.

The connection between migration or migrant communities and gender dynamics is complex and though often invoked in political discourse, there is little quantitative evidence to contribute to those debates, and to what often amounts to distorted and demonized accounts of migrants and ethnic minorities’ gender cultures. This research project uses a life-course approach to connect migration journeys, gender dynamics of labour division, and intersectional inequalities through and post-migration. The project is articulated into two research questions. The first uses event history data and sequence analysis to model interlocked trajectories of migration, couple formation and employment, and uses these to discuss the impact of migration experiences on the gender division of labour in migrant couples in the UK. The second builds on the same data and typology but extends the focus to investigate more specifically how migrants’ characteristics and migration journeys can affect temporalities of family formation, career progression and access to citizenship and sense of belonging to the national community of the country of immigration. The new event history dataset will connect well-researched dimensions of the life-course such as employment and partnership history, with milestones of migration journeys and with changes in time-use and in identity. In so doing, this dataset will represent a valuable opportunity for both British and European scholars to conduct research on migrants and migrant families that works with the complex interlocking of the life-course in and around migration experiences. The project has important policy implication as it brings attention to the role of migration experiences – hence of the immigration regimes which heavily constrain them – in the production of social and gender inequalities.
