Understanding Society welcomes visitors for stays of one to four weeks.
Understanding Society, based at the Institute for Social and Economic Research (ISER) University of Essex, is a world leading innovative research infrastructure project. The team leading the Study encompass roles including topic and methods expertise, social, statistical and biological sciences, survey and instrument design and methods, the management of large scale fieldwork and engagement with participants, project and contract management, governance, management of complex data processes and producing value added data, data access and sharing, innovation and experimentation, linkage to wide ranging external data sources, training and user support, communications, outreach, and policy engagement.
Understanding Society has a visiting fellowship programme to encourage exchange and networking with other surveys and infrastructure projects, both within the UK and internationally. We welcome visitors from academic, professional or technical roles to visit for a period of one to four weeks to exchange learning about different aspects of leading longitudinal studies or data infrastructure projects.
What we offer
- A lively environment working with the Understanding Society team of over 60 people, based within ISER, which includes three other research centres: ESRC Research Centre on Micro-Social Change (MiSoC), the Centre for Microsimulation and Policy Analysis (CEMPA) and the Cross National Surveys Unit (CNSU), and in a building that also houses the UK Data Service.
- The opportunity to develop a programme to engage and learn from different parts of the Study team, depending on your interests, and to share and received feedback on your experiences and challenges.
- The opportunity to attend team meetings, academic seminars and workshops, and the support of IT services and library during your stay.
- Reimbursement of the costs for travel to and from the host institution, as well as for accommodation according to the expenses incurred (in line with the travel expenses rules of University of Essex).
How to apply
Please send Dr Paulo Serodio an indication of the aims of your visiting fellowship – the topics on which you would like to learn more and exchange experiences with Understanding Society colleagues. We will then connect you with relevant colleagues, who will work with you to develop a programme for your proposed visit. You should send your final application (two sides of A4) setting out your aims for the visit, specific activities/teams you plan to meet with, presentations or workshops you might like to hold, as well as the preferred time and duration of your stay and budget, together with your CV, by e-mail to Paulo: pamato@essex.ac.uk.
You can submit an application at any time. The Understanding Society Executive Team will review applications and award visiting fellowships on a monthly basis. At the end of your visit, you will be required to submit a summary of the experience and learning you have developed.
