Abstract

Wave 14 of Understanding Society includes a new household boost sample (GPS2), using an experimental approach with web-first and CAPI-first assignments. This study compares GPS2 respondents to national population figures to assess representativeness. Results show that, while the sample profile of household members was similar to that of the population in terms of age and sex, certain groups were underrepresented among adult respondents: ethnic minorities, London residents, men, and young adults. Combining GPS2 with the original sample (GPS1) improved overall representativeness. Based on the findings, we outline some recommendations for future boost samples and the future of Understanding Society.
