How does Understanding Society support our neurodivergent participants?
Thank you for agreeing to take part in Understanding Society, your contribution is vital to helping us understand changes over time and improve outcomes for individuals and communities.
Here is some information which will hopefully help your interview run as smoothly as possible. If you are autistic, ADHD, dyslexic, or have any other neurodivergent traits – we want you to feel informed, supported, and in control.
What is a longitudinal study?
A longitudinal study means:
- You take part once a year
- We want to understand how things change for people over time
What to expect
Here’s what will happen during the study:
- Regular check-ins
Once a year we will send you an invitation letter by post and email, if we have your email address. We will also send you a magazine with recent findings from the study a couple of times a year. - Structured process
Every time you take part, we will try to keep it as predictable as possible. - Time for you to respond
You can take your time to answer questions. There’s no rush — we want you to feel comfortable.
Accommodations & support
- Take as much time as you need to complete your interview
- Reminders via text or email (please keep us updated with your latest contact information)
- You can ask a friend or a family member to support you during the interview.
Your rights
You have the right to:
- Say no to any question
- Take breaks or reschedule
- Ask for help or clarification
- Stop taking part at any time — for any reason
You do not need to explain why.
Privacy and confidentiality
We will keep all your information private and secure.
Your answers are confidential. If you ever feel unsure or want to know more about how your information is kept safe, feel free to ask.
Can you leave the study?
Yes, you can leave the study at any time if you choose.
You don’t need to explain why — your decision is respected.
If you want to leave, just tell us, and we will stop contacting you.
