Text: Let's look at an example diary day. As we go through this, feel free to ask about anything you might not understand. This shows what someone was doing between 6am and 10am - note that the real diary day starts and ends at 4am. As you can see, activities lasting more than 10 minutes are recorded by drawing an X in the first and last 10 minute spaces and are joined by a continuous line. Activities that last at least 5 minutes but not more than 10 minutes are marked only with an X in the space between the vertical lines. Here the person was sleeping, code 1, from 6am to 7.10am. Then, washing and dressing, code 3, from 7.10am to 7.40am. Here they prepared breakfast, code 5, from 7.40am to 7.50am then ate breakfast, code 4, from 7.50am to 8.10am. Here they travelled to work, code 10, from 8.10am to 8.50am and then worked at their job, code 11, from 8.50am to 10am. You can see secondary activities indicated here. From 7.10 to 8.20 this person was looking after their children, code 15, getting them up, giving them breakfast, getting them to school. While travelling they were also reading, code 21. Notice we are interested in how people travel. This person took the train for 20 minutes, indicated by two T's in the adjacent 10 minute slots here. Enjoyment with activities is recorded here on the bottom along with who was with them at the time of the activity. Our example enjoyed sleeping quite a lot, felt more neutral about all of the morning chores but liked taking their children to school. Here they were with their spouse whilst sleeping, their children whilst doing the morning chores, etc.... When you have completed the day, please don't forget to put both diaries in this envelope and drop it in the post. Do you have any questions about when to complete the diary, how to complete it, or how to post it back?

Text: I'll now talk you through how to complete the diary. The aim is to record how you spend your time throughout two specified 24 hour days. The day is broken into 10 minute segments. We would like you to record your activities from 4am on ff_diaryweekw7 until 4am the following morning with no gaps, then again from 4am on ff_diarywew7 until 4am the following morning with no gaps in time. All of your activities need to be assigned to one of the codes listed here on the left hand side of the diary. Notes about what to include are listed here on the right hand side, but there is also a more detailed explanation of all the codes in the pages at the back. The amount of time spent in each activity is indicated by drawing a horizontal line in line with the appropriate activity code at the time of day that activity occurred. Mark an X in the 10 minute box indicating the start of the activity and another X in the 10 minute box corresponding to when the activity ended, connecting the two with a horizontal line. If you were doing more than one thing at a time, we want to know what else you were doing in addition. These additional activities are called secondary activities. We are only interested in one main activity and one secondary activity. If you were doing more than two things at the same time, you should decide which was your main activity and secondary activity. The length of time sent in the secondary activity may be different from the main activity. Secondary activities can sometimes become main activities and vice versa. For secondary activities, just indicate the start and end of the activity with a dot rather than an X. Any activity that lasted 5 minutes or longer should be recorded. If several activities take place in any 10 minute period, you should record the longest, the next longest could be recorded as a secondary activity. For some activities, we are only interested in 'active time'. For example, preparing the dinner may take an hour from start to finish, but for 40 minutes of that hour the food is cooking. In this instance, you would record only the 20 minutes of time actively preparing food, and the 40 minutes while the food is cooking should be counted as whatever else you were actually doing at that time. At the bottom of the diary in line 31, please record how much you enjoyed doing these activities using the scale specified there. Also, for every activity, please record who you were with at the time in line 32 at the bottom using the codes specified there.
