Cognitive ability: Subtract 7: Number of correct subtractions
Cognitive ability: Result of a test of working memory (Subtract 7), or the short-term integration, processing, disposal and retrieval of information. Respondents were asked to give the correct answer to a series of subtraction questions. Starting at 100, respondents were asked to subtract 7 up to 5 times. This variable counts the number of correct subtractions starting 7 from the previous answer, i.e. independent of whether the previous answer was correct or not. For further information on the cognitive ability measures on the UKHLS, see S McFall (2013): Understanding Society: UK Household Longitudinal Study: Cognitive Ability Measures.
