Derived variable note:

Number of non-employment spells since last interview. Counts the number of times respondent's employment status was neither "in paid employment" nor "unemployed". Last wave status included in the count if the respondent was not self-employed, employed nor unemployed in the last wave and have not reported to be in paid work. Some respondents do not report a change in employment status but a comparison of their previous and current wave employment status suggests that there was a change, either in the status itself or in the report of whether the respondent is currently in paid employment. In this case, when either last year's employment status or current year's employment status was unequal to employed, self-employed or unemployed, it is assumed that a spell in "non employment/inactivity' was completed. Inapplicable [-7] to proxy respondents and [-8] for those who were not responding adults in the last wave.
