Derived variable note:
Alter’s relationship to ego (i.e., apno relationship to pno). Recode of the edited relationship variable to resemble the code frame that existed on the British Household Panel Survey (BHPS). No attempt has been made to correct for differences in the data collection which means the information is not directly comparable across studies. For example, BHPS categories such as “Any grandparent”, or “Any aunt/uncle” include higher-order relationships which would be reported as “Other relative” in Understanding Society; cohabiting partner’s children may be reported as “other non-relative” in Understanding Society but would be classified as “partner’s step-child” in BHPS.
