Ego’s relationship to alter (i.e., _PNO’s relationship to _APNO). A copy of the variable RELATIONSHIP except it replaces a number of coding errors. Households with one of the following (potential) relationship inconsistencies have been inspected and the relationship codes of all household members to each other have been amended as appropriate (also if the inconsistency did not relate to the originally identified inconsistency): HH including a respondent with too many natural parent, HH including child that is partner of somebody, HH including child that is parent of somebody, HH including child that is older than parent, HH including person who is partner to >1 person, HH including child that is older than grandparent, HH including niece/nephew that is older than aunt/uncle, HH including any pair of siblings >20 years apart in age, and HH including a pair of minors who are each other’s brother/sister in law. Some cross-wave inconsistencies have also been corrected. Note that given the complex relationships there are no rules that generally apply to fix such coding errors. There are a considerable number of relationships which continue to be inconsistent over time, or are highly implausible even in the current wave. The majority of these relate to sibling and parent status. For example, there are a large number of children who are biological siblings in one wave, then become half-, step- or adopted siblings later on. Code to identify the errors is available upon request. In the course of harmonisation with the BHPS, with effect of the 2019 data release, we have additionally checked for cases where minors were coded as son/daughter in law. This was a common error in the BHPS relationship grid.
