Sex, derived
Information about the sex of every household member is asked as part of the household grid and reported by someone in the household. This information is confirmed in each wave and is recorded in sex in individual and multi-level files. The variable sex in the crosswave files contains the latest value available. As this value may be inconsistent across waves, we have created a longitudinally consistent version based on the information collected from all sources across all waves. This is named w_sex_dv in individual-level files and sex_dv in crosswave files. Assumes a value of 1 if all information in the study suggests the respondent is male, 2 if all information in the study suggests the respondent is female and 0 if the information is inconsistent and the forename listed in the survey administration database also does not suggest a particular gender. Not defined for respondents who only ever participated in BHPS Waves 1-18.
