Understanding Society launches 12th annual Insights report, showcasing research on health, work, and the cost of living

Understanding Society’s annual Insights publication has been published, focusing on three different areas where research can shine a light on government policy. This year’s themes are:

  • economic insecurity and the cost of living
  • long-term inequalities and health
  • improving work and health.

Key findings

Some of the findings from the research include:

  • links between fuel poverty and financial distress
  • the rise in pensioner poverty
  • health inequalities in ‘left-behind’ neighbourhoods
  • the impact of working conditions on mental health.

Raj Patel, Associate Director of Policy at Understanding Society, says, “This year’s Insights looks at three major policy challenges. According to a National Audit Office report, only 8% of major government projects are evaluated – but whether a policy is achieving its desired outcome, and for whom, is an important question. Understanding Society’s household panel design and multi-topic content can make an important contribution to evaluation.”
