New variable search

We’ve improved the way you can search for variables!

You can now search by using a keyword, see key variables by topic, or use the expanded, hierarchical index terms associated with each variable.

Key variables highlight the most relevant variables for certain topics, helping researchers quickly grasp how the subject is represented in the Study. We’ve selected key variables to give a clear overview of what can be explored, helping to identify where to begin with analysis. These variables serve as a starting point for understanding the topic and its potential applications in research. They also show which waves the variable appears in and can be filtered by data file and variable type. Topics covered include families and households, health, finances, employment, education, and more.

Our index terms identify all variables by theme and are grouped in a hierarchical tree to help users navigate to associated variables. They cover all the thematic areas in Understanding Society. Users can explore other related terms to find the exact variables required.

Go to the variable search.

We hope you find our new search features helpful! We’re always looking to improve, so please share any feedback on the new search and index terms with our User Support Team.
