Summary
The Industrial Injuries Advisory Council (IIAC) have continued to consider the emerging data of the occupational impacts of COVID-19 following the publication of its Position paper 48: ‘COVID-19 and occupation’ published in March 2022. IIAC found the most convincing and consistent evidence was for health and social care workers in certain occupational settings who present with five serious pathological complications following COVID-19 that have been shown to cause persistent impairment and loss of function in some workers. There were less consistent findings for other occupational sectors such as transport, education or protective services to make recommendations at this time. Equally, it has also not been possible for IIAC to recommend prescription for post-COVID Syndrome or long COVID at this time. Acknowledging the pandemic is ongoing, it can be expected there will be further evidence on the long-term adverse health consequences of COVID-19. IIAC will therefore continue to monitor the evidence in respect of other occupations and long COVID.
