Derived variable note:
Ethnic group derived from multiple sources such as self-reported as an adult, self-reported as a youth, reported by a household member, and ethnic group of biological parents. There are some differences between ethn_dv and racel_dv . Most of these differences are by design as ethn_dv imputes values when racel_dv is missing. But there are a few differences even when non-missing values of ethn_dv and racel_dv . The reasons for these differences are: (i) Respondents are asked the ethnic group question (racel or racel*t ) only the first time they are interviewed. in a few cases, racel is asked multiple times, and in those cases racel_dv prioritises the earliest report while ethn_dv prioritises the latest report. (ii) If the respondent choses any of the "other" categories in racel /racel*t (values 4, 8, 13, 16, 97) then respondents are asked to write in the ethnic group (racelo ) which is coded into racel categories and released as variables racelo_code and racelot_code . ethn_dv uses these other coded values only if racel is missing or 97 while racel_dv uses the other reports whenever available.racel , racelt , racelwt , racelmt , racelat , racelbt , racelot_code , maid , paid , yprace , ethnic1 to ethnic14 and ethnic96 , indethg1 to indethg14 and indethg96 , race .racel_dv , ethn_dv_source .
