Question text:
This year, in addition to asking you some usual survey questions, we would also like to collect some finger prick and hair samples. The finger prick and hair samples contain different substances that health researchers can analyse in order to study how our lifestyle and events in our life affect our health. These samples are usually collected by a nurse or at a research clinic. However, for some large studies, where participating households are spread across the country, this is not always possible. Many health researchers are therefore interested in whether participants can collect their own samples and return these to the researchers. Your blood samples will be analysed for cholesterol (total cholesterol and HDL), triglycerides and HbA1c (glycated haemoglobin) levels which are related to heart disease and diabetes. We will also analyse a number of substances related to nutrition, such as vitamin C, vitamin B1, vitamin B2, vitamin B6, vitamin B12, vitamin A, vitamin E and vitamin D. Your hair sample will be analysed for certain hormones which have been shown to be related to stress including cortisol, cortisone and testosterone. We would like to send you two sample collection kits to use on your own and send back to us. These kits have everything you need to collect a small sample of your hair, and a dried blood spot sample from one of your fingers. They will contain full instructions on how to collect these samples and return them to us. To thank you for your time and effort, we will send you a £5 voucher for each of the samples that you return to us. Please visit our website for more information (link to FAQs https://www.understandingsociety.ac.uk/sites/default/files/downloads/health-ip12-faqs.pdf ). If you give us your consent to return your results, we will also tell you the results for HDL, cholesterol and haemoglobin levels in your blood samples. Are you happy for us to send these kits to you?
