Summary

Key points: The gender pay gap was linked to family formation; the gap gradually widens for 12 years after having a child. Gender differences in rates of full-time and part-time paid work after having a first child were an important driver of differences in wages for men and women as part-time workers wages stagnated. Addressing gender differences in working patterns would make the biggest difference on the gender pay gap for those who have degree-level education.
