Make the most of your poster session
Create a poster with real impact by following this guidance from the Understanding Society team.
Before the conference
Get the format right
- Your poster will need to be printed as a size A0 portrait.
Make the design clear
- A matt finish to your poster is preferable to glossy lamination.
- Arrange information in columns rather than rows. It is easier for viewers to scan a poster by moving along it, rather than zigzagging back and forth in front of it.
- An introduction should be placed at the upper left, and a conclusion at the lower right.
- Your poster should be self-explanatory and viewers should be able to understand the poster, without assistance. Therefore posters should be kept simple and clear and a mixture of text or graphics is recommended.
Illustrations
- Graphs or charts should be designed to be viewed from a distance and should use clear graphics with a large typeface.
- Each figure or table should have a heading of one or two lines. Additional essential information should be provided below in a legend.
- Photographs should have good contrast, sharp focus and, if necessary, an indication of scale.
Text
- Minimise narrative.
- Use large type in short, separated paragraphs.
- Numbered or bulleted lists are effective ways to convey a series of points.
- Do not set entire paragraphs in uppercase or boldface type.
Titles and fonts
- Titles and captions should be short and easy to read, in a sans serif font for preference.
- Use large lettering as this means a number of people can read the poster from a distance without overcrowding.
- Remember to caption your poster with the abstract title, authors’ names and affiliations.
- Headings should be a minimum of 50 point size, whereas 25 point size is suitable for text.
During the conference
When to put your poster up
- All posters can be put up from 09:00 on Tuesday 21st July, and should be in place in time for your allotted viewing session (please put them up as early as possible during the conference, for maximum exposure).
- All posters should remain in place until after the end of Poster Viewing Session B at 16:30 on Wednesday 22nd July.
Where you plan to put your poster
Your poster will be allocated a poster board number and a numbered panel will be allocated for each poster. Please visit the registration desk to collect your details.
Remember the timings
There are two poster viewing sessions:
Poster Session A – Tuesday 21st July 15:00-16:00
Poster Session B – Wednesday 22nd July 15:00-16:00
You will be required to stand by your poster during your allotted viewing session, which you will have been told in your poster acceptance letter. All posters will be available during both sessions.
Prizes
At this year’s conference, there will be prizes for the best poster. All conference visitors will be asked to score posters and the highest scoring two will each be awarded a gift voucher. The prizes will be awarded at the end of the second plenary session on Thursday 23rd July (13:00).
Cancellations
Please register for the conference to confirm your attendance by 15th May at the latest. Please let Victoria Nolan know as soon as possible if you are no longer able to present your poster.
Closing of the conference
- Please take down your poster by the close of the exhibition (16:00 on Thursday 23rd July).
- Any posters remaining after 17:00 on Thursday 23rd July will be removed by the organisers, who accept no responsibility for loss or damage.
