Make the most of your time at the Understanding Society Scientific Conference by checking out the hub of activities that will be taking place this year.



At this year’s conference, there are a wide range of activities to take part in.

Plenaries

This year, two keynote speakers will be presenting.

Professor Sara Arber – Tuesday 21st July @ 11.30am
Professor Sara Arber has been Professor of Sociology at the University of Surrey since 1994 and is Co-Director of the Centre for Research on Ageing and Gender. At the conference, she will give a presentation on “Exploring Ageing, Exploring Sleep” using Understanding Society data.

Professor David Bell Thursday 23rd July @ 11.30am
Our second speaker, Professor David Bell has been the Professor of Economics at the University of Stirling since 1990. His main research areas include economics of social care, economics of subjective well-being, the Scottish economy and the economics of education.

Parallel presentation topics

This year there will be 70 presentations which will highlight the key topics that researchers need to know about including health and biomarkers, wealth and income, survey methods, employment, wellbeing, social mobility, education and ethnicity.

Poster sessions

We will have over 20 posters on display. Presenters will be available at set times on Tuesday 21st and Wednesday 22nd so you can discuss their findings with them.

Drop-in sessions

The team at Understanding Society will be running a series of drop-in sessions to enable visitors to find out more about the study and ask any specific questions they may have about the data, design, or the study in general. We will have a range of experts available, from the health specialists to the communications team.

User consultation

We have invited experts to comment on the current content of Understanding Society’s youth questions and questionnaires. At the conference, the results will be discussed to further develop our priorities for the youth and youth adult questionnaires in the future.

Workshops

Looking to improve your knowledge of genetics or get a better grasp of longitudinal modelling? These are just some of the topics that will be covered in our tailored workshops which will be presented by our experts.

Networking

There will be many opportunities to network throughout the conference including at our Tuesday evening drinks reception and the Wednesday evening barbecue and band.
