Workshop 2: Cross-national comparative research on migration using longitudinal studies

What: Training Workshop
When: Mon 10 July 2017, 13:00 – 17:00
Where: Essex Business School – Room 1.1, Wivenhoe Park, Colchester, CO4 3SQ

Comparative longitudinal research on migration has the potential to identify and answer key questions around migrant selection, integration and reception not possible with single country or cross-sectional studies. Yet despite this enormous potential, longitudinal comparative migration research faces challenges of appropriate data, harmonisation of concepts and measures and achieving high levels of multi-country expertise.

This workshop is intended as a practical step towards addressing these challenges and to advancing comparative longitudinal research on migration focusing on the ethnic minority, migrant and refugee boost samples in Understanding Society and the German Sociology-Economic Panel (SOEP).

Members of the Understanding Society and SOEP teams will provide an introduction to the various boost samples in the two studies, and discuss issues of sample design, representativeness, and harmonisation of measures and concepts across the studies.

This will be located within the range of migrant/ minority samples within other longitudinal studies and specific longitudinal studies of ethnic minorities and existing longitudinal comparative research.

It will be followed by focused discussion and exchange intended to share expertise, identify potential areas of interest and foster future collaboration.

It is open to those with experience of migration research using longitudinal or cross-national studies who are interested in understanding more about the minority /migrant boost samples and in developing comparative longitudinal research projects.

The workshop is open to all on a first come first served basis.
