Results of the youth consultation to be discussed at conference

Views on the content of Understanding Society’s youth questionnaire and related questions asked of young adults have been collected and will be discussed at the conference.

The consultation has been launched to invite researchers and funders to comment on whether the youth questionnaire and young adult modules address the future needs of key scientific and policy agendas.

We particularly want to hear from youth researchers who have not yet made use of the data as well as those researchers and research users who are familiar with the data and related research.

Professor Michaela Benzeval, Deputy Director of the study comments on the importance of the consultation:

“As a longitudinal panel study, we need to ensure we are effectively balancing continuity of measures over time with anticipating new research agendas as they emerge. We would welcome your views on the ways in which the youth questionnaire and young adult modules can be improved to address future scientific and policy questions.”

Background information

Fieldwork for Understanding Society began in January 2009, building on the success of the British Household Panel Survey. The seventh wave of the study went into the field in January 2015.

Following an extensive consultation prior to Wave 1 on the content of the questionnaires, a long term content plan was developed for the youth, young adult and adult questionnaires. These combine a structure of annually repeated measures (about 40% of the questionnaire) with a series of rotating thematic modules which are carried at two, three, four or five year intervals depending on the topic area and expected rate of change. This structure was developed to enable the wide range of topics required by the research and policy communities to be carried out.

How to respond
